Your face can be your most prominent and interesting physical feature. Unfortunately, the effects of sun exposure, genetics, weight fluctuations, smoking and pollution can collectively impact the appearance of your face. A face lift helps people address these various effects by firming and tightening the skin in the face and neck area.
A face lift can create a dramatically more youthful appearance. East Bay plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Mariotti performs face lifts and other facial plastic surgery procedures for men and women of all ages.
Why a Face Lift?
A facelift can address and mitigate signs of aging such as sagging skin, deep creases and loss of muscle tone. Although this requires tightening the skin, Dr. Mariotti understands that no one wants a “fake-looking” or “worked-on” appearance, so he is dedicated to delivering natural results. Gone are the expressionless, wind-tunneled, pulled-back looks of the past.
Dr. Mariotti strives to create a younger look for his patients with as little “evidence” as possible. When you view patient photos, you will see that Dr. Mariotti works hard to create natural-looking results for his face lift patients. A face lift can take years off of your appearance without dramatically changing the underlying characteristics that make you unique.
Dr. Mariotti’s face lift patients are typically between their mid forties to their late sixties, but beautiful, natural-looking results are across the board. Regardless of age, if you are not ready for surgery, Dr. Mariotti offers several non-surgical alternatives such as injectable fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.

What to Expect
This surgery is performed under general anesthesia with the assistance of a board certified anesthesiologist, who remains on hand for the duration of the procedure. Dr. Mariotti believes that this approach offers the highest level of safety and comfort for his patients.
There are several techniques used during a face lift procedure but, in almost all cases, the sagging neck muscles are tightened, the jowls are lifted and cheek fat is restored to its original position. After this, the skin is conservatively and strategically tightened to produce a more youthful appearance while being mindful of minimizing any outward appearance of surgery.
On occasion, liposuction can be used to better contour the chin and neck. For your comfort and safety, Dr. Mariotti recommends staying one night at Premier Surgery Center, where a dedicated Nurse will care for your every need.
Your New Look after a Facelift
The morning after your surgery, Dr Mariotti will stop by the surgery center to see how you are doing. Upon his recommendation, you will be sent home with some light dressings, which will be removed in 48 to 72 hours. Most of the sutures Dr. Mariotti uses are dissolvable, which means that very few will need to be removed. You should expect some bruising and swelling but these generally subside within the first week. Although your results will continue to improve over the course of the next several weeks, you will be able to see and show off your transformation in just 10 to 14 days.

Face Lift FAQs
The average cost of a face lift is around $7,000 to $8,000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This number does not include additional fees such as operating room costs and anesthesia fees and might be slightly higher in large metropolitan areas.
The cost of a face lift can also vary depending on the technique that you choose. Mini face lifts, for example, generally cost less than full face lifts, but the results are typically less dramatic.
Start your search by looking for board-certified plastic surgeons in your area. While you can travel for a face lift, the recovery process can be smoother if you have a shorter travel time back home after your procedure.
Next, look for a plastic surgeon who has experience specifically with facial plastic surgeries. These procedures require an artistic eye, a delicate hand and intricate technical skill. Thus, you’ll want to find someone who has plenty of face lifts under their belt.
Ask to see before and after photos of face lifts from previous clients to give you an idea of the level of detail and finesse.
The best surgical technique and face lift type for you will depend on your individual goals and your natural facial anatomy. For some people, a mini face lift is enough to produce the results they are looking for, while others will likely be more satisfied with a full face lift procedure.
A mini face lift can address smaller areas of sagging skin and wrinkles in the lower face, while a full face lift can yield more comprehensive results in the mid and lower facial areas.
A liquid, or non-surgical face lift can be an appropriate option if you don’t have very pronounced signs of aging already or are not quite ready for a surgical procedure. A liquid face lift involves the use of non-surgical injectable fillers and/or BOTOX® or Dysport® to temporarily smooth away lines and wrinkles with little to no downtime.
You should not feel any pain or discomfort during your face lift procedure, since it will be performed under general anesthesia. After your face lift, however, it is normal to experience tenderness, tightness, swelling and bruising.
These symptoms are usually easy to manage with the use of over-the-counter or prescription pain medication prescribed by Dr. Mariotti. You should notice a gradual improvement in swelling, bruising and tenderness in the coming days and weeks.
Plan to take around 2 weeks off work and other daily duties to recover from your face lift. During the first several days, you can expect significant swelling and bruising and will need to take it easy as your body begins its healing process.
Dr. Mariotti will work with you to gradually increase your activity level as you continue through the recovery process. Most people are able to resume their normal exercise routines around 4 to 6 weeks after a face lift.
While you may see results directly after your face lift, know that swelling and bruising can hide the full results that are still developing. It can take around 6 months to see your final outcome after getting a face lift, although most men and women feel comfortable returning to their social lives around 2 to 3 weeks after a face lift.
