Adult candidates for ear surgery have often spent their lives feeling self-conscious about their appearance, often trying to find ways to camouflage their ears and avoiding short or pulled-back hairstyles. Kids can also be teased at school or in their social activities. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, performed by Dr. Eric Mariotti can free you or your child from that self-consciousness and provide a new sense of confidence.
Here is just one of the many children and adults Dr. Mariotti has helped through ear surgery.
How Is Otoplasty Performed?
Otoplasty usually involves an elliptical-shaped incision in the cartilage behind the ear. After making this incision, Dr. Mariotti will shave, flatten, fold, or otherwise manipulate the cartilage to achieve a new shape and correct the position of the external ear. Fine sutures are placed to hold the ears’ new position during healing. Compressive dressings are then applied to protect the surgical site and help hold the ears’ new shape during recovery. Scar lines are located behind the ear and are not visible after recovery.

Otoplasty can be performed on children and adults, though your child’s ears should be fully developed prior to beginning a surgical procedure. This usually occurs around the age of 5, though developmental stages can vary. Adults looking to get cosmetic ear surgery can do so at virtually any age, provided they are in good physical and mental health.
Otoplasty generally causes only minimal pain or discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medications and/or anti-inflammatory medications are often all that is needed to relieve discomfort immediately after ear surgery. For most people, pain and discomfort associated with ear surgery subsides within the first few days after their procedure.
Yes, ear surgery is generally a safe procedure with minimal complications. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks such as infection, bleeding and scarring. Dr. Mariotti will discuss the risks and benefits of ear surgery with you to help you decide if this could be the right solution for you or your child.
Ear surgery results can be visible almost immediately after your procedure, though it can take 1 to 2 weeks for swelling and bruising to subside, gradually revealing your results. Most people feel comfortable returning to work or school around one week after their ear surgery. However, it can take 3 to 6 months to see your final otoplasty results.
Yes, ear surgery results are typically long-lasting and usually do not require an additional procedure in the future. However, slight changes in the appearance of your ears might occur over time, but these changes are usually minimal and are to be expected with age.
