Men who are self-conscious about the shape or appearance of their ears might avoid wearing shorter hair styles or leaving the house without a favorite hat. If this is the case for you, know that ear surgery, or otoplasty, can help to free you from feeling like you have to cover up part of your natural appearance.
A board-certified plastic surgeon serving clients in Walnut Creek and beyond, Dr. Eric Mariotti has been able to help hundreds of men achieve natural-looking results from ear surgery and part ways with feelings of self-consciousness for good.
Ear Surgery at a Glance
The Best Candidates
People of nearly any age who are in good physical health may be able to benefit from ear surgery. Men who are self-conscious of protruding ears or drooping ear lobes might seek an experienced plastic surgeon to perform ear surgery and achieve their desired ear shape and size. Ear surgery can also be performed to repair a torn, damaged or previously pierced or gauged earlobe.
What to Expect
First, Dr. Mariotti will sit down with you one-on-one to discuss your cosmetic concerns and desired results. Then, he will go over your ear surgery options with you and explain the details of the procedure, which typically involves an elliptical-shaped incision that’s concealed behind your ear. Earlobe repair is even more minimally invasive, depending on the level of correction required.
Your ear surgery will be performed at our surgery center and typically takes just a few hours to complete. Earlobe repair should not require any significant post-surgical bandages or coverings, while with otoplasty, sutures and compressive dressings are used to help hold the new position of your ears while they heal.

After Your Ear Surgery
For earlobe repair, you can plan on returning back to work or your normal routine right after your appointment. The recovery period following otoplasty is relatively short and most men are able to return to work and light physical activity within just a few days or a week afterwards. It can, however, take up to 6 weeks to heal completely and see your full ear surgery results. During the first few weeks of recovery, avoid vigorous exercise to help minimize the chance of complications and optimize your results.

Ear Surgery FAQs
No, otoplasty should not affect your hearing. This procedure is performed on the outer visible areas of your ear, while your ear drum and other parts of your ear associated with hearing are located in your inner ear.
You should see a noticeable improvement in your appearance directly after your dressings are removed following ear surgery. However, keep in mind that it can take several weeks for swelling to diminish, so you’ll still see gradual improvements as you continue to heal.
Although scars are an inevitable result of any surgical procedure, Dr. Mariotti takes great care to place incisions in inconspicuous locations—usually behind your ears—so that the resulting scars are virtually unnoticeable.
Once your ear surgery is complete, you can expect to enjoy the same natural-looking results for years to come. Of course, the natural aging process can affect the appearance of your ears down the road, which may result in wrinkles and sagging skin, but should not affect the size or shape of your ears.
