She came to Dr. Mariotti from Sacramento with the desire not necessarily to have a "perfect body", but rather, she just wanted to fit into her riding jeans nicely, without her lower belly or hips spilling out of the top of her jeans. How much weight can I lose using liposuction?
Liposuction isn't designed to be a weight-loss procedure, although it does remove fat. The maximum amount of fat that is actually removed during a liposuction treatment is between 6 and 8 pounds. Liposuction tones and contours areas of the body that still have stubborn fat despite exercise and other healthy lifestyle habits. Good candidates for liposuction maintain a stable weight both before and after their procedures.
How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?
Liposuction is a popular treatment for the abdomen because that is one of the most common areas for stubborn fat to accumulate. Many people also have stretched skin in this area, particularly after pregnancy or major weight loss. Abdominoplasty, also called a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure to remove that excess skin and tighten stomach muscles. If your skin is too lax, especially after significant weight loss or pregnancy, liposuction isn't a good option because removing fat will actually make the skin appear looser. In many cases Dr. Mariotti combines liposuction with a tummy tuck, such as for patients who are getting a Mommy Makeover.
Is liposuction only for the abdomen and "love handles"?
Although liposuction is an effective body contouring treatment for the abdominal area, it can be used for many other areas, too. Dr. Mariotti uses liposuction to sculpt shapelier thighs, diminish the appearance of "bra rolls" and upper back folds, and to tone the upper arms. Liposuction is even a good choice for the neck and jawline for patients who want their facial profile to have more definition. Another option for the neck is KYBELLA®, a nonsurgical treatment that minimizes the appearance of a double chin. Additionally, Dr. Mariotti frequently performs liposuction along with other body contouring surgeries, because its versatility makes is such an effective "partner procedure."

What is the best type of liposuction?
If you spend even a minimal amount of time researching liposuction you'll quickly realize that there are several different types available. There is liposuction that uses ultrasound energy, such as VASER® LipoSelection, laser liposuction, and power-assisted liposuction. One of the most important things to remember is that the results you get depend more on the skill and training of the plastic surgeon than on the specific type of liposuction performed. That's why it's important to carefully research surgeons to ensure they are certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery and have the experience and training necessary to safely perform liposuction and get consistently great results.
Dr. Mariotti offers much more than beautiful results - he'll ensure that you feel relaxed and cared for. Discover why people from around Walnut Creek trust him for their plastic surgery.
What is LipoSelection?
VASER LipoSelection is a type of liposuction that uses ultrasound energy to break up and dislodge fat, which is then removed using small, specially designed tubes called cannulas. Dr. Mariotti considers LipoSelection as a better choice for some patients. Like traditional liposuction, the procedure begins by injecting the targeted area with a saline solution that contains a local anesthetic. The solution solidifies and swells the fatty tissue. A small probe inserted through tiny incisions vibrates at a high ultrasound frequency and shakes fat cells loose from surrounding tissue. Cannulas then suction the fat from the body.
How long will my results last?
Liposuction results can last indefinitely if you maintain good diet and exercise habits. Although the fat cells Dr. Mariotti removes will not grow back, your remaining cells can still enlarge if you gain weight. Dr. Mariotti is glad to talk with you about long-term strategies for maintaining your results.
