Eyelid Surgery Stock ImageThe tender skin around our eyes begins to sag and lose elasticity as we age. If you are in your late 30s or early 40s, you may already have noticed your upper eyelids starting to droop. The appearance of darker "bags" of skin may be forming beneath your lower lids as well. With time, this eyelid sagging can worsen, and eyelid wrinkles may begin to form. As a result of drooping upper eyelids, your eyes can look smaller, and your face can appear older or tired. For men and women in the Danville and Walnut Creek areas, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) performed by Dr. Eric Mariotti can improve the appearance of the area around your eyes and perhaps even improve your vision.

Dr. Mariotti is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving the East Bay. If you'd like to make an appointment, simply request a consultation online or call his office at (925) 685-4533.

Why Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, achieves several goals: it tightens droopy or hooded eyelids, restores contour to the lids, and eliminates "bags" under your eyes. For people in San Ramon and Danville, eyelid surgery can make your eyes appear bigger and brighter so that you look younger and more alert. The immense popularity of this procedure is an indication of the great results that can be achieved.

During Surgery

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation although, under certain circumstances, Dr. Mariotti may use general anesthesia. If you have chosen to combine your Walnut Creek or Danville blepharoplasty with another procedure such as a face lift, neck lift or forehead lift, these procedures can be performed at the same time.

To correct the upper eyelids, Dr. Mariotti makes a pair of incisions creating an elliptical shape across the eyelid crease. Excess skin is removed between the incisions, exposing the underlying muscle. A thin strip of this muscle is removed to help define the eyelid crease after surgery.

To correct the lower eyelids, an incision is made just below the lower lashes. Fat and excess skin are either removed or repositioned to fill in the area between the eyelid and cheeks, giving a more natural transition and younger appearance. If the skin below your eyes is puffy but not sagging, excess fat may be removed through an incision inside the lower lids, with no external incision or scar.

Dr. Mariotti and Staff,
Thank you so very much for your kindness and compassion, as well as your impressive work. My self-esteem has been remarkably lifted and I am truly grateful.

Showing Off Your New Look

After eyelid surgery, patients will be able to go home after only a short stay in the recovery room. There will be a few stitches which Dr. Mariotti will remove in 5 to 7 days after surgery. Recovery times vary, but most patients are able to return to their normal activities after 7 to 14 days. Although any discomfort is relatively minor, patients typically experience mild bruising and swelling around the eye area, which should dissipate after about 10 days. You will want to avoid any vigorous physical activity for at least 3 weeks.

Many of Dr. Mariotti's patients choose to enhance their results with BOTOX® Cosmetic at his Walnut Creek area practice. BOTOX Cosmetic can help temporarily lift the brow in addition to diminishing forehead wrinkles, opening up your eyes even further.
