Why Breast Augmentation?
The size, shape and appearance of your breasts can influence how you feel about your body and, in turn, yourself. Whether you desire larger breasts, are trying to re-create your pre-pregnancy shape, want to regain a figure altered by cancer or other trauma, or just hope to turn back the clock, being content with the shape and size of your breasts can help you exude a sense of pride and self-esteem.
During your consultation, Dr. Mariotti will discuss the different approaches to breast augmentation and your breast implant options and help determine whether you can also benefit from a breast lift. For further information, read our section on breast lift with augmentation, another option for women interested in breast enhancement. Another popular choice is a Mommy Makeover which helps women renew their bodies after pregnancy.

Breast Implant Options
You have several choices when it comes to selecting breast implants. Dr. Mariotti helps guide the decision-making process so that your results are ideal for your specific body type and frame. The breast implant options include size, shape, texture, and profile, in addition to whether you want the implant shell filled with saline or silicone gel.
Selecting the right implant size for you is a highly personal choice. Discuss your cosmetic goals with Dr. Mariotti during the consultation and choose some photos from the before-and-after gallery that reflect the results you desire. Remember that the same sized breast implants won't look the same on every woman because everyone's body shape is unique.
Breast implants are round or teardrop-shaped to reflect the natural slope of a breast. Round implants provide more fullness to the upper area of the breast, resulting in enhanced cleavage. Teardrop-shaped implants are fuller in the lower portion, preferably for patients seeking results that look more natural.
The exterior of the implant shell can be either smooth or textured. Textured implants are slightly rough, so that breast tissue adheres to the shell and prevents it from moving within the implant pocket that Dr. Mariotti creates during surgery. This is important for patients who choose shaped implants because the implant should not rotate. Round implants can be textured or smooth, although Dr. Mariotti finds the smooth texture to work in the majority of women. Many women prefer that smooth implants move more freely, so they look a bit more natural when moving.
The profile of an implant refers to its projection and how the results look when viewed from the side. Another way to think of the profiles is in terms of wide, medium and narrow widths. The ideal profile depends on the width of your breasts and the width of your body's frame. The most common implant profiles are moderate plus profile and high profile, although some implant manufacturers offer additional choices. Dr. Mariotti can help you find the right profile for you.
Performed at Premier Surgery Center in Concord, the breast augmentation procedure typically takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Most patients receive general anesthesia and are discharged from the recovery room after about an hour or two of observation following their breast augmentation. Dr. Mariotti's patients will find the surgery center conveniently located, allowing them to return home quickly and comfortably.
Showing Off Your New Look
Recovery times can vary widely depending on body chemistry, age and health history. Dr. Mariotti employs a special technique at the end of surgery, which assists his patients tremendously with pain management. With light dressings and our recommended massage techniques, this approach greatly reduces any post-operative discomfort you might have. Although implants placed below the muscle can feel tight, any discomfort is easily controlled with oral pain medication.
After your breast augmentation procedure, you will go home with some minimal bandaging to cover your incisions. You will be able to shower and wash your hair the next morning, and you should be up and around the next day. You can expect to resume light activity or a desk job with no lifting in 3 to 5 days. If you have a more active job, we estimate 2 weeks. After that, choosing the special occasion to reveal your new look is up to you!
Frequently Asked Questions
Should my implants be placed above or below the muscle?
Breast implants can be either inserted into a small pocket above the pectoral muscles or behind them. In almost all cases, Dr. Mariotti recommends placing the implant beneath the muscle for the following reasons:
- There is less risk of capsular contracture, a complication in which scar tissue hardens around the implant and constricts it.
- The chances of visible rippling or wrinkling are minimal.
- Results look more natural no matter how much breast tissue the patient has to cover the implants.
- Shaped implants placed behind the muscle rarely shift position.
- Round implants placed behind the muscle look and feel more like natural breasts.
Do I need a breast lift or breast augmentation?
This is a common question, especially for women who have had children or have recently lost a significant amount of weight. The best way to determine which procedure will give you the desired results is to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. If your breast skin has retained most of its elasticity and there is only minimal sagging, breast augmentation alone is probably the appropriate choice. For women who want to increase the volume of their breasts but who have moderate to severe sagging, a breast lift combined with augmentation is needed. Dr. Mariotti can help you decide which is right for you.
Will breast augmentation interfere with breastfeeding?
Getting breast implants poses little risk to your future ability to breastfeed. It's a good idea to inform Dr. Mariotti if this is a concern, because it will influence where he makes the incision. The incision location Dr. Mariotti uses most often is in the fold of the breast where the scar is disguised and no breast ducts are disrupted. An incision just below the edge of the areola, called a periareolar incision, is the most likely to disrupt the milk ducts involved in breastfeeding. Dr. Mariotti can choose another incision option for you.
