What Is KYBELLA?
KYBELLA is a treatment approved by the FDA to reduce the fat below the chin, called submental fat. It uses deoxycholic acid, a chemical that occurs naturally in the body and helps break down dietary fats. When KYBELLA is injected just below the skin, it attacks and destroys fat cells. The fat cells gradually die and get removed from the body through normal metabolic processes.
There are different reasons you may accumulate fat in the area below the chin. Even people who are in good shape and eat a healthy diet can develop a double chin. The reasons for a double chin include:
- Weight gain
Getting rid of fat in the neck can be difficult, even when you lose weight in other areas. Until KYBELLA's approval, liposuction was the only real procedure available. But many people either don't want to undergo a surgical procedure or can't take the time needed to recover. KYBELLA offers a convenient alternative.
The KYBELLA Procedure
A KYBELLA treatment session typically takes about 45 minutes, including about 15 to 20 minutes for Dr. Mariotti to actually make the injections. A topical numbing cream applied to your neck helps reduce discomfort. Dr. Mariotti then carefully marks specific points in a grid that guides where he makes the injections.
Each treatment session involves making multiple, brief injections. Dr. Mariotti customizes the specific number for your needs. Some patients see good results after a single treatment, but most patients get 2 to 4 treatments scheduled a month apart.
Showing Off Your New Look
KYBELLA injections produce results gradually as the fat cells in the treatment area die. You'll notice swelling in the neck following a KYBELLA treatment, although the swelling is the most pronounced after the first treatment. The swelling may resolve within a week, but it can take up to 3 weeks to diminish for some patients. You may also experience some discomfort at the injection sites and notice some redness.
Fat begins to fade about a week after treatment, with final results developing after a few weeks. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they are gone for good, so the treatment is considered permanent. You can maintain your results indefinitely by sticking to healthy diet and exercise habits.
