To reduce wrinkles and add volume to lips or other facial features without surgery, dermal fillers are just what the doctor ordered. While BOTOX® Cosmetic can only treat dynamic wrinkles such as frown lines or crow's feet, dermal fillers can fill deep creases, plump lips and eliminate other signs of aging. There are a variety of fillers to choose from, such as JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel, RADIESSE®, Restylane® and Sculptra® Aesthetic for Walnut Creek women and men who visit MSpa. Dr. Eric Mariotti; his nurse injector Chris Milam, R.N. B.S.N.; or his physician assistant Kim Mello can help determine which filler is right for you.

It's important to discuss with Dr. Mariotti, Chris, or Kim exactly what you can expect from each treatment. Together, you can prioritize which areas are most important to you, and discuss how many treatments you may need and the estimated cost. One treatment may not fully correct every line on your face and, as the results of dermal fillers are not permanent, full correction requires continued treatments. Dr. Mariotti, Chris, or Kim may recommend combining your filler treatments with BOTOX Cosmetic at our practice near Walnut Creek as part of a nonsurgical facelift. You can also maintain your results with a regular treatment plan at a great price through our Beauty Memberships program.

Restylane

Restylane is the world's best-selling dermal filler. It is a cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Restylane maintains its shape using the body's own moisture. As hyaluronic acid gradually degrades, each molecule binds to more water and, over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid. This ability of hyaluronic acid to bind to water is what helps provide lasting results. Although slightly more expensive than collagen, Restylane can last anywhere from 2 to 4 times longer. Also, because Restylane contains no animal proteins, there is lower risk of allergic reactions.

Restylane Silk

If you've always had thin lips, or if they are losing volume as you get older, Restylane Silk injections can create fuller lips that look natural. Silk — like other Restylane products — is made using hyaluronic acid, but with a formulation specific to thinning lips and the fine lines that develop around the mouth. These "smile lines" are often one of the earliest signs of aging. The smaller, smoother particles in Silk differ from other Restylane fillers, which makes Silk ideal for the subtle addition of volume.

Restylane Lyft

Volume loss in the midface area, especially the cheeks, can make you look older than you are by creating a hollow appearance. Where traditional hyaluronic acid-based fillers have fallen short in this area, Restylane Lyft can achieve the desired result. Its thicker formulation means a smaller amount of Restylane Lyft can get the same desired results as comparable products, making it a more affordable option. Patients may experience results lasting an average of 10 to 18 months.

JUVÉDERM Injectable Gel

Also made with hyaluronic acid, JUVÉDERM is a smooth-consistency gel that glides easily into the skin. Particularly suited for nasolabial folds (also referred to as "smile lines"), JUVÉDERM is the only FDA-approved filler to last up to 1 year and to be safe and effective for persons of color. JUVÉDERM is available in two solutions: JUVÉDERM Ultra and JUVÉDERM Ultra plus to correct deeper creases.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC

This hyaluronic acid filler is approved by the FDA to replenish volume in the cheeks that has diminished as a result of aging. VOLUMA XC is effective on all areas of the cheek and creates a natural-looking, youthful fullness that can last for up to 2 years. Formulated with lidocaine for a comfortable treatment experience, VOLUMA XC delivers a subtle lift on its own.

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®

Like Restylane Silk, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA is FDA-approved for lip augmentation and smoothing out perioral lines around the mouth. VOLBELLA is also made with hyaluronic acid, but at a much more delicate formulation. This offers more precision, for fuller lips that look and feel natural. VOLBELLA also garners results that typically last up to a year.

RADIESSE

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, RADIESSE is a calcium-based filler that actually encourages your skin to produce more collagen in the treated area. This is a more substantial product and, although it is used often in the nasolabial folds, it is also ideal for use along bone, such as the jaw line or cheeks. RADIESSE is identical to substances found naturally in the body so there is very low risk of allergic reaction. Many of Dr. Mariotti's patients have had him combine RADIESSE with hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane or JUVÉDERM, sometimes referred to as a "Liquid Facelift." Results can last up to 1 year or even longer.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Made from poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra is approved by the FDA for the restoration and correction of facial fat loss. It is most often used to treat deep folds between the nose and mouth as well as creases and wrinkles around the mouth and chin. Through a series of injections over a period of a few months, it can help replace lost collagen by creating an environment beneath the skin that encourages the growth of new collagen. As a result, changes appear gradually and create natural-looking, long-lasting improvements that can last up to 2 years.

Common Questions

How do I know which filler is best for me?

Fillers are not one-size-fits-all products, and it's important to choose an injector with the expertise to know which fillers work best in certain areas of the face. Dr. Mariotti has years of experience with injectable treatments, including both fillers and BOTOX, and patients trust him to recommend the treatments best-suited for specific cosmetic concerns.

During your consultation, Dr. Mariotti will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan that matches your goals.

Do filler injections hurt?

Most patients tolerate the injections quite well. Many fillers are now formulated with lidocaine, a local anesthetic that helps minimize discomfort during treatments. We can also apply a local anesthetic cream to the treatment area to create a more comfortable experience. This is typical for lip injections, for example, because the lips are especially sensitive.

Can the results be reversed?

Yes. Most patients are quite satisfied after getting fillers, but occasionally the outcome is different than what a patient expected. In such a case, Dr. Mariotti injects an enzyme called hyaluronidase directly into the treatment area, which rapidly breaks down the hyaluronic acid filler used.

It's important to note that hyaluronic acid-based fillers, such as JUVÉDERM, are the only ones with a reversal enzyme. RADIESSE and Sculptra have a different chemical composition, so they cannot be dissolved in the same manner.
