What’s Your Breast Augmentation Motivation?

Dr. Eric Mariotti, whose plastic surgery practice serves Walnut Creek and Concord, looks into the various motivating factors he’s seen among breast augmentation patients. He says that although most patients have some goals in common, each woman has a unique story.

Thousands of U.S. women get breast augmentation surgery each year and they all have one general goal in common: to increase the size of their breasts. Beyond that, though, each woman has a unique motivation behind her decision. Maybe a woman has wanted bigger breasts since she was young, or maybe that desire developed over the years as the result of a life change. I enjoy learning about the varied motivations of my breast augmentation patients as we work together to figure out which aesthetic options will give them the most satisfaction.

Here are some of the most common reasons I’ve seen among patients interested in breast augmentation:

  • Underdevelopment: This is probably the most common motivating factor for women who want breast implants. The majority of my patients have wanted bigger breasts for many years, often telling stories about feeling insecure in certain kinds of clothing or bathing suits or of not feeling as feminine as they would like. Many have friends and family members who have larger breasts and say they have always been envious. I find it helpful when my patients bring in photos of women who have breasts that are the size and shape they would like. This helps me determine what kind of implants to choose for a more natural-looking or more dramatic transformation.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Mothers are commonly interested in breast augmentation because of changes caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnant and nursing women experience big changes in their breast size over the course of several months and the breast skin is often not elastic enough to “bounce back” to the way it was before pregnancy. I see many patients who simply want to restore the volume they lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding and I can incorporate a breast augmentation into a complete Mommy Makeover that also addresses other areas affected by pregnancy, such as the abdomen.
  • Weight loss: This motivator also has to do with shifts in breast volume that leave inelastic skin stretched. When a woman gains and then loses weight, her breasts may be left sagging. Sometimes the best procedure to fix this cosmetic concern is a breast lift or a combination breast lift with augmentation. This option removes overly stretched, excess skin and restores lost volume.
  • Aging: As women age, the tissue and structures of the breasts change due to natural shifts in reproductive hormones. This often results in a loss of firmness and fullness. At my practice, I tell patients breast augmentation can be appropriate for adult women of any age as long as they are healthy enough to undergo the surgery. It’s not uncommon for women in their 50s or older to choose breast implants.
  • Asymmetry: All women have some degree of asymmetry between their breasts. For some women, though, the difference may be more than a cup size and easily noticeable. I can address this concern by using implants of different sizes.

These are just a few of the many reasons women choose this transformative procedure. Each of my patients’ stories is as different as their bodies and I enjoy learning these stories so I can deliver results that are sure to match their expectations.
