Some of the plastic surgery procedures are performed to correct medical conditions and would be covered by medical insurance. The following is a list of some of these conditions. This list is meant only to give you a general idea about what might be covered but for actual coverage, you will need to discuss your condition with your plastic surgeon and the insurance company.
ABDOMINOPLASTY / PANNICULECTOMY
A panniculectomy–often confused with a tummy tuck–reduces excess skin and fat, which hang below the abdomen like an apron. The degree of overhanging can be moderate, with a fold hanging down to just above the pubic region or in some cases much more severe. A tummy tuck is performed on people of relative normal weight but a panniculectomy can be performed in patients with weight ranges from normal to severely obese, and who have lost significant weight. Reduction of excess fat and skin through panniculectomy can greatly improve quality of life, reduce the stressed and back pain caused by the terribly disfiguring condition and enhance body hygiene. A cosmetic tummy-tuck is never covered by insurance, however, removal of only the overhanging skin can sometimes be covered after an initial exam, submission of a letter of medical necessity along with photographs to the insurance company.

To reduce the size of very large breasts that are causing back, neck or shoulder pain or causing shortness of breath or difficulty in keeping the right erect posture on walking or standing. Enlarged male breasts may be covered by insurance.
BREAST RECONSTRUCTION
To correct a congenital absence of breast. To construct a breast lost to disease, e.g. breast cancer, severe fibrocystic disease of the breasts, or after prophylactic removal of the breasts (patients with strong family history of breast cancer). To construct a breast lost to injury, e.g. burn or other traumas.
EXPLANT OF BREAST IMPLANTS
The removal of your breast implants might be covered by your insurance. This is never an easy task, but if your implants are causing you pain, most likely from a capsular contracture, a letter of medical neccesity may convince your insurance company that the procedure is needed for a medical reason. Rarely, if ever, do insurance companies pay for implant replacement or exchange, even if they cover the explantation.
